Maury Sough, Derbyshire
Maury Sough is situated on the south side of the River Wye at Millers Dale, near Taddington, Derbyshire. Due to water levels, Maury Sough is only accessible for part of the year, via a short, lidded air shaft close to the sough tail requiring a ladder and lifeline for a safe descent. Driven with the intention of dewatering Maury Mine, it dates back to at least the 1600s. This series of photos demonstrates some of the varied character of Maury Sough.

The rails here appear to be spanning some bottomless pit - in fact, the water is not as deep as it looks. Crossing the rails with care quickly reaches a solid floor beyond. |
