Lava caves of Sicily
The volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily, play host to several hundred lava tubes. The caves range from small cavities of minimal interest, to lava caves of over 1km in length. On our 2010 visit to Sicily, we made a special effort to visit, and photograph, some of the more accessible lava tubes. This photo gallery presents some of the results!

The entrance to Grotta dei Trei Livelli is easy to find - it is literally right by the roadside. It was, like numerous other lava caves, discovered during construction of a road, in this case the SP92 Catania - Etna. |
