Photo Gallery :: Maury Sough, Derbyshire

Maury Sough is situated on the south side of the River Wye at Millers Dale, near Taddington, Derbyshire. Due to water levels, Maury Sough is only accessible for part of the year, via a short, lidded air shaft close to the sough tail requiring a ladder and lifeline for a safe descent. Driven with the intention of dewatering Maury Mine, it dates back to at least the 1600s. This series of photos demonstrates some of the varied character of Maury Sough.

Looking up a very wet shaft in the sough (with an aged chain hanging down, not visible here) just before the shored-up section of passage. The shaft leads to some fairly lethal-looking workings and the chain is barely attached - DO NOT USE!
