Photo Gallery :: Lava caves of Sicily

The volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily, play host to several hundred lava tubes. The caves range from small cavities of minimal interest, to lava caves of over 1km in length. On our 2010 visit to Sicily, we made a special effort to visit, and photograph, some of the more accessible lava tubes. This photo gallery presents some of the results!

A good hour or two's walk from Piano Provenzana on the North flank of Sicily's Mount Etna is the popular Grotta Dei Lamponi or Raspberry Cave. A wooden sign stands at the main entrance - like many lava caves, this has several entrances, only two of which are easily accessible.
