Photo Gallery :: Volcano trekking in Java, Indonesia

Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

Anak Krakatau volcano emitting small clouds of suphur dioxide and other gases

Anak Krakatau volcano in a phase of pre-eruptive activity in September 2011. The gaseous plume contains a high proportion of sulphur dioxide. Molten lava is believed to have been visible in the crater at this time, though we had to turn back only a short distance from the crater rim due to the noxious gases - and the fact that our respirators had foolishly been left at Carita, some two hours away by boat!
