Volcano trekking in Java, Indonesia
Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

Porters at Kalimati camp, Semeru, Java

The porters for the Semeru climb are hardy, hardworking souls. Clad in wellingtons and warm clothes, they ferry the weight of provisions for Western tourists as though the climb were an easy stroll. Here they are arriving at Kalimati camp, where they will deposit their loads then walk another 2km to collect water and firewood before cooking the evening meal. |
