Volcano trekking in Java, Indonesia
Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

Kelud lava dome

The eerie Kelud lava dome, a volcano that emerged a few years ago from the centre of a beautiful lake, once a major tourist attraction. The lake has now virtually gone and has been replaced by this ominous, monstrous bulge that is growing at around 3cm per day. We had never witnessed anything quite so (volcanically) bizarre as this. |
