Photo Gallery :: Volcano trekking in Java, Indonesia

Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

New Selo, the starting point for the ascent of Gunung Merapi

Not so much a village as a very large sign above a cluster of makeshift shacks, New Selo is the best point from which to undertake the ascent of Merapi and it is well worth ensuring you have transport from Selo village itself to here - it saves a very steep and unrelenting slog up the road. Get yourself a guide for the ascent too; you'd make it so far without difficulty on your own, but the best current route up the final cone changes constantly.
