Volcano trekking in Java, Indonesia
Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

The summit of Merapi with its own shadow at sunrise

If you manage to top out of Merapi just before sunrise (as we did) you may just be able to see a small lava lake glowing brilliant red in the half-light deep down in the crater. As the sun rises, the almost-perfect summit cone of Merapi appears as a shadow upon the sea of clouds below - a breathtaking sight. |
