Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

Merapi ascent route

Looking back down the ascent route of the North side of Merapi to Selo village in the far distance. This is the only safe ascent route - the southern slopes of Merapi are prone to lahars (mud slides) and any dangerous eruptive activity is more likely to occur on the south side. |
