Volcano trekking in Java, Indonesia
Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

Merapi summit climb

The demanding four-hour ascent of Merapi is done almost totally in the dark, to make the most of being able to 'top out' as the sun rises. Here our excellent guide, Agus, raises the Indonesian flag to celebrate our arrival at the edge of the summit crater. With him are a couple of 'waifs and strays' we picked up en-route to the summit - one French, one Israeli. |
