Photo Gallery :: Volcano trekking in Java, Indonesia

Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

Telaga Warna lake, Dieng Plateau, Java

The tranquil, sapphire and turquoise-hued lake of Telaga Warna at the Dieng volcano complex belies a sinister secret. The turquoise colour is created by the bubbling sulphur vents under water. Entering the lake is definitely out of bounds however, as it has also been known to release lethal carbon monoxide gas.
