Images from our 2011 volcano trekking adventure across the Indonesian island of Java, visiting Anak Krakatau, Papandayan, the Dieng volcano complex, Gunung Merapi, Gunung Kelud, Gunung Mahameru (Semeru), Mount Bromo, and Kawah Ijen. All this with a day's caving in South Malang thrown in mid-itinerary for good measure!

Fumarolic activity at Papandayan volcano

Steaming fumaroles at Papandayan volcano are evidence that the volcano is very much alive. Hissing menacingly, they gush hot acrid steam into the air yet create the most delicate crystal forms. They also trash cameras - be warned! |
