Spar Gells Mine - Wirksworth, Derbyshire
Spar Gells mine near Wirksworth is one of the many ancient mines in Derbyshire. Accessed by either of two shafts - one ~120' deep, the other ~180' - the mine's main feature is an impressive hading stope. These photos were taken on a visit to the mine with the Wirksworth Mines Research Group

The impressive hading stope in Spar Gells Mine, Wirksworth. Some of the original stemples (timbers) are still in place and clearly visible, as are the old iron rails on which tubs to transport fluorspar ran. |
